The Cathedral of the Assumption and its Rooftop
León Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the city’s defining monument. Beyond housing the tomb of celebrated poet Rubén Darío, its unmissable experience is the rooftop.
The roof is whitewashed to a brilliant finish that reflects the sun. Walk among its curved domes while taking in 360-degree views of colonial rooftops and the Maribios volcanic range. Visitors are normally asked to remove their shoes—bring socks to protect your feet and the paint. Confirm current opening hours, admission and rooftop access before visiting.
Other Attractions and Volcano Boarding
León is the base for one of Central America’s best-known extreme activities: volcano boarding on Cerro Negro. After hiking for an hour up an active black-sand volcano, you descend on a wooden board at speeds of up to 70 km/h. In the city, visit the Museum of the Revolution, where former Sandinista fighters guide visitors through national history.

Behind the cathedral, street carts sell some of the country’s best quesillo—a corn tortilla with braided fresh cheese, pickled onion and cream—along with refreshing jícaro seed drinks.
